Odyssey of the Mind
Odyssey of the mind is a creative problem solving competition for students in Kindergarten though College. Teams of up to 7 students solve a long term challenge and present their solution in the form of an 8 min skit at a regional competition.
Students use STEM knowledge and skills and do much brainstorming to come up with unique ideas. Team members must create the skit, make the props and costumes and use teamwork to make it all happen within the time limit. There are scores for their creative style, the long-term solution, and how well the team handles spontaneous problem solving.
Teams choose from 6 different problems to solve where the parameters change each year. There is a vehicle problem, a technical problem, one that involves classic art, architecture and literature, a structure building problem and two theatrical problems. This program promotes hand-on projects and the program is one students will remember long after their years in school. The emphasis is on having fun being as creative as possible.
A hands-on project class for students where they learn basic engineering processes and use STEM skills to solve challenges. They then test their solutions and redesign to solve the challenge even better.
Class will meet on Wednesdays from 1:10 – 2:20 during the 1st quarter grading period. Cost for the 7 classes is $70. per student. First class meets August 17, 2016. Additional forms may be found in the school office or by request at firstname.lastname@example.org
